Data analysis is often the most difficult task facing students and novice qualitative researchers, including Shane the Lone Ethnographer—a grad student with fond visions of the Wild West—and her horse Transcriptor. In this comic-style textbook, we follow Shane as she attempts to corral her data and make sense of it for publication. Shane learns how to read, sort, code, write, and assess the analysis of a qualitative study in the traditions of ethnography, grounded theory, discourse, and narrative analysis. Along the trail, she receives helpful advice from experienced researchers who explain their analytic practices in detail. Written in a friendly, comic book style, Shane’s Wild West adventures in data analysis will be both instructive and an enjoyable read.

This case study reflects upon the advantages and challenges to using large-scale freely available social science data in the testing of theoretically derived hypotheses. The original study was designed to test the role of three types of strain, derived from General Strain Theory, on substance abuse and dependence by two cohorts of females: a group defined as pre- or perimenopausal (aged 35-49 years) and a group defined as menopausal or postmenopausal (aged 50-64 years), hypothesizing that older age (and hence menopausal) was a significant strain that could contribute to substance misuse. The data used for the initial study were downloaded from the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research and were obtained from the National Archives of Criminal Justice Data.

The former Rolling Stone writer and MTV host takes off from classic Roger Ebert and sails boldly into the new millennium. Millions grew up reading the author's record reviews and watching him on MTV's "The Week in Rock." In this collection of more than 200 movie reviews from and, more recently, the Reason magazine Website, plus sidebars exclusive to this volume, Loder demonstrates his characteristic wry voice and finely honed observations. The author shines when writing on the best that Hollywood and indie filmmakers have to offer, and his negative reviews are sometimes more fun than his raves. This freewheeling survey of the wild, the wonderful and the altogether otherwise is an indispensable book for any film buff.
