Sir Seretse Khama, the first President of Botswana and heir apparent to the kingship of the Bangwato people, brought independence and great prosperity to his nation after colonial rule. But for six long years from 1950, Seretse had been forced into exile in England, banned from his own country. His crime? To fall in love and marry a young, white English girl, Ruth Williams. Delving into newly released records, Susan Williams tells Seretse and Ruth's story - a shocking account of how the British Government conspired with apartheid South Africa to prevent the mixed-race royal couple returning home. But it is also an inspiring, triumphant tale of hope, courage and true love as with tenacity and great dignity Seretse and Ruth and the Bangwato people ovecome prejudice in their fight for justice.

This new and expanded edition offers the most thoroughly researched account of the notorious Komagata Maru incident. The event centres on the ship's nearly four hundred Punjabi passengers, who sought entry into Canada at Vancouver in the summer of 1914, only to be chased away by a Canadian warship. This story became a symbol of prejudicial immigration policies, which Canadians today reject, and served to fuel the emerging anti-British movement in India. It deserves the careful re-examination it gets in this thoroughly updated edition that provides a contemporary perspective on a defining moment in Canadian, British Empire, and Indian history.

Excerpt from The Colour Bar The white woman who gives herself to a black man is denounced by all of her own colour in Africa, but most loudly by those white men who have not themselves been faithful to their own race. For as in the beginning when the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair and took them wives of all which they chose so also in our own times when the sons of Europe descended upon Africa they often took concubines from among the Natives of the country but they never allowed their own women who followed them to mate with the men of the lesser breed. It was so also among the Natives before the whites came. From old Natives one may still hear of what befell some of the men of the tribes indigenous to the country that is now Rhodesia when they dared to aspire to the favours of women of the invading Matabele. I remember an old man with whom I had been discussing this subject who said sententiously as if the matter did not admit of any argument, "The women belong to the men who take the country, the men who are beaten can only take women of their own tribe." It has always been so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
